Pongo was raised a country boy. He was unchipped, unaltered, unidentified and running wild. When we say wild, we mean wild: One of his favorite pastimes was chasing and killing chickens. That’s typical Rat Terrier behavior, of course, but it’s also the kind of behavior that would get him killed in his neighborhood. In fact, that was hit fate until one of our outstanding fosters and volunteers took him in and began teaching him the domestic way of life. No one was going to shoot this cutie.
He spent a few months in foster care with Susie, her puppies and sweet Penny (the black hound). We finally had room for him in March and he and Penny both bunked together for several months, socializing with other dogs, getting to know lots of people and preparing for their future.
This pint-sized dynamo had a ton of energy and had a blast in the field, playing ball with Tasha and our other young terriers at the time. Like all of our dogs, however, he needed a stable environment with someone who had as much energy as he did.
That someone, his daddy Diego, showed up in September. He had lost his beloved dog of many years and he was ready to give another terrier a chance at a metropolitan but active lifestyle. It was love at first sight.
We still receive wonderful letters from Dad, telling us how much he is thankful for this little man and attaching pics of Hercules (Pongo’s name now) sporting his latest fashion sense. Speaking of … here are some photos of him living his life in his Midtown home between park adventures.
The year ended as busy as it started with big changes, an adoption for someone who really needed it, the arrival of a couple of darling bookends … and the loss of a little one who we will always remember. Thank you to everyone for helping us through this wild ride of ups and downs. Let’s hope for a positive 2013.
Volunteer Day
The month licked off with a super-busy volunteer day at the ranch. All hands were on deck to weatherize the kennels, work on the inside kennel runs, teach some of the dogs agility, clean kennels and enjoy some chili and adoption stories. We made some major strides in creating an indoor safe haven for some of our special-needs “house” dogs in the indoor kennel. We hope to complete the attached outdoor runs soon, so the dogs will have indoor/outdoor access.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and worked so hard – and to some of you who show up and work hard like this every weekend.
Our next volunteer day is tentatively scheduled for the spring. We’ll keep you posted.
Hartley Heals
What would a monthly update be like without another major vet bill? After months (years before arriving here) of wrestling with ongoing ear infections, Hartley finally got some relief with an extensive ear canal surgery in mid-December. He is still recovering (and has definitely not enjoyed the inconvenience), but once he is over this, he will hopefully never suffer again.
Eli’s Holiday Wish List
We asked Eli to re-review his Amazon Wish List for the rescues and update it. He did and we have been promoting it. We have received a few goodies from the list. Thank you. If you would live outside of Georgia, would like to donate something to the dogs they need and know it will go directly to the rescue, this is the way to do it. Check out the list and see what fits your budget. Every little thing helps.
Operation Maggie
Maggie began showing signs of kennel “frustration” a few weeks after her arrival at the ranch in July. It had risen to a point where she had began to chew on the bars and had cried so much, she was straining her trachea. We had to get her out of the kennel and into a foster home until her forever family showed up. Meanwhile, the perfect forever mom in Oklahoma found her. This one really hit close to home and, within days, we had put together a transport to get her there. She is loving her new life, rocking in the chair with Mom and exploring every inch of her acreage. No more tears for this little girl.

Katie and Gracie arrived
Katie and Gracie finally arrived at our rescue. They had been all over the rescue boards after both their mother and father died within a few months of one another. Their family could not keep them and was desperate to get them together and into a loving home. They had been in foster care with Linda for several weeks because we didn’t have any space for them. They finally arrived in mid-December and we absolutely love them. We are absolutely going to love sending them to their forever home even more. They have had a few inquiries; we’ll keep you posted.
Abigail
Christmas Eve brought us a round of heartbreak. It has always been a difficult night as Jimmy, our co-founder, passed away on Christmas Eve in 2008. This year, one of his favorite rescues, Abigail, decided she wanted to join him and left us that afternoon. She had not shown any signs of cancer until the end. When we discovered how far it had spread, we quickly let her go. We are still healing and will be for some time. Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of sympathy and kind words.
We know sweet Abigail is running circles at the Rainbow Bridge

With so many emergencies and vet bills in October, we spent much of November focusing on fund-raising events. We had signed up for SocialVest earlier in the year, but really amped it up for holiday spending and SocialVest’s sign-up contest, which awarded cash prizes to the winners. Unfortunately, we didn’t win anything, but have continued to receive a small but steady stream of checks for the dogs since. If you haven’t signed up, please do. It costs nothing to help donate towards the dogs.
We also participated in our first Belk Charity Sale. Thank you to everyone who turned out for that.
While More Vet Bills Mounted
While we were trying to raise funds, we were racking up more vet bills. Slick went to hospital with signs of some type of infection. He stayed there for several days until his bronchial infection was wiped out.
He is still having good and bad days, but we think some of that is just him milking the cold months to stay in the house instead of the indoor kennel. 😉 He’s smart like that.
Little Help from/for Our Friends
Intown Healthy Hound in Grant Park stepped forward to help us with through our hard times. They created a wonderful Angel Tree with needs for the needs, as well as devoting their Beer Night on Dec. 13 to a fund-raising event for Toys for Tots and us. As it turned out, they, too, were hit hard financially a couple of days later when burglars stole more than $30,000 in food from their warehouse. The fundraiser became a much-needed one to recoup their own loses, but their customers/you gave generously to the dogs via the Angel Tree. We look forward to working with them in 2013 on more events.

Adoptions & Sanctuary … for Now
We had to make a difficult decision at the end of the month to cease regular rescue efforts. We were drowning in vet bills, the kennels were full, and we were already had several dogs waiting in foster and boarding to move in. Even with more volunteers on deck, it had become too much to handle for the winter months. We will re-asses our situation when both the weather and our budget improve.

We love all of our rescues, but there are just some who completely win our hearts. Mars was (and will always be) one of those.
Maybe it’s because this gorgeous boy was at the ranch for years. Sometimes, it was hard to understand why, considering how incredibly handsome he is. He was the perfect Parson Russell by all given standards, and none of us could fathom why he had been abandoned at the shelter years ago with skin allergies that made him scratch at his gorgeous face.
He loved treats. He hunted. He was strong … and strong-willed. Sure, those are all Terrier traits, but he was all of them to the max. He was also very loving. He had been taken home by prospective families more than once and was returned because of his, um, spirit. His sugar mama worked with him many times to focus this energy for good, teaching him to sit, to not pull on a leash and, well, to just be handsome beyond words. If she hadn’t already had a boy like him at home, he would have been hers.
Check out this video of his diposition on any given day. This is how he lived life at rescue, even after spending it in a 10-by-10 kennel most of the time.
We wanted nothing more than for him to find his forever family … even though we dreaded how it might break our hearts. We had grown so accustomed to that smiling face that we knew it was going to be hard to say goodbye. But it was meant to be and we were ready to accept it.
In June, we received an email from a man named Gary Siverts about Mars that just up-ended our worlds. There was no doubt it: This was Mars’ forever family. The problem? They lived across the country in Missouri. Once again, we do not have any kind of transport system in place and had to rely on volunteers to make it happen.
It eventually became a very successful “Mission for Mars” and it one of our favorite memories of the year.
Mars is now living an incredible life with his dad, mom and sister Tiger. He still looks for trouble on a daily basis, but is enjoying running on the golf course … and napping on the couch, the ottoman and the bed … His daddy keeps us updated all the time about his progress, and we could not be happier for him. He is the reason we rescue.
Here’s some pics since his adoption. Yes, he stays active; this is just the only time Daddy can catch him for a still photo. 😉

October was another month of struggle and heartbreak; one that has left us swimming in vet bills and begging for donations to move forward. It also restored our faith in others.
Ruff Start
Chloe resting after surgery.
The first week was an incredibly ruff week for our two special-needs girls, Chloe and Pippa.
After several consultations, it was agreed that Chloe would have all of her teeth pulled. (Yes, all of them.) This helped with her ongoing infections and she has a very healthy appetite. Unfortunately, she hasn’t gained much weight. We are now trying another high-protein food and will keep you posted.
Pippa’s white blood cell count shot up to an alarming rate and she, too, ended up in the hospital. She was treated for the infections and the decision was made to give her heartworm treatments. She sailed through them and is loving life in her foster home.
We are still recovering from the financial hardship of these visits, surgery and treatments, but do not regret a thing we did to help save these precious gals.
Yard Sale
To help raise funds for the vet bills and keep our mission alive, we held a yard sale in the middle of the month. The outpouring of donations to sell was wonderful. Some of the donations were too wonderful for a yard sale, however, but will be perfect for our big auction next year. Stay tuned.
Costume Fun
To keep things positive, we sponsored a Halloween photo contest on Facebook to have a little fun. We had some wonderful entries. Ranger Joe had a huge following and won by a landslide. His mom donated the $25 PetSmart card back to the rescue.
We also dressed up some of our guys and gals for a special Belk ticket sale event.

And we just had some fun with some wonderful donated costumes at the ranch. 😉

September was a month that truly tested our patience and will to go on. Had it not been for the introduction of some new (amazing!) volunteers, we could not have gotten through it.
Heartbreak Hotel
Two heartbreaking cases of neglect, Chloe and Pippa arrived in September … even though we were once again full. After countless vet visits and surgeries, Chloe is still struggling. She has not gained weight as we had hoped. She remains feisty, but we may have to reassess her situation soon. Despite some lung damage from heartworms, Pippa sailed through her treatments and has is now being spoiled rotten in her foster home.
Little Lola
Lola graduating in November.
No one will forget sweet Lola’s photos … and challenges. She was pulled by another rescue and fostered by the Mitcham family. No one could understand how this adorable little girl was left at the shelter … until the truth came to light. She was blind. And unsocialized. An anxious.
Thanks to the dedication and commitment from her foster family, Lola graduated from the pint size class at Jabula Dog Academy in November! She still has a lot to learn, but this is a huge step forward for this special-needs girl who has been through and overcome so much already.
Her family has also become a priceless addition to our volunteer group. They are always out at the ranch, taking care of dogs, delivering hay, making repairs and helping in any way they can. Their passion and involvement has been priceless.
Rocket’s Assessment
Rocket, one of our two fear-aggressive boys, left the ranch for the day to meet Lisa Matthews of Pawsitive Practice. She gave him a complementary evaluation – and a complimentary one. He can someday be adoptable with the correct training. We tried to make that happen, but missed the classes because of bigger emergencies. On a good note, he has had exposure to a lot more volunteers since then and has learned to trust a lot easier. Thanks again to Lisa for her help and to all of the volunteers who have worked with him.
[nggallery id=130]
Campaigns for the Jacks
We kicked off a couple more campaigns in September, including Get Yer ‘Backs, Jacks and the Belk ticket sale. We are still avidly seeking donations from small businesses as we are planning a big auction and several events next year. Learn more.
Ginger’s Big Adventure
Ginger was also breaking our hearts. She arrived happy and spry, but started to show signs of kennel depression after a few weeks. We were thrilled beyond words when a woman named Bonnie reached out to us from Ohio and wanted to adopt her. You know what’s coming now: How on earth could we get her there without a transport system? Thanks to the power of Facebook, a couple of doggone good Samaritans, Kasey and Kimberly, stepped up and made the long but amazing trip.

It’s Christmas Eve and we all love a little miracle, so here’s a beautiful one.
Despite years of neglect and physical ailments, Pippa has an unconquerable spirit, a beautiful smile and is full of unconditional love for humans.
Pippa arrived at the ranch in September. She had spent her entire 7 years of life in a concrete run with two bigger dogs who ran all over her. Her feet were flattened and deformed because of it. Her owners also decided that heartworm medicine was something that didn’t really matter much, so her little heart and lungs were swimming with worms. She was gasping and limping and we’ll be honest – we didn’t think she was going to make it.
She showed us!
We took her to Dr. Wright and he presented us with the difficult choice: Give her a massive heartworm treatment and pray she could withstand it … or put her down. We don’t want to subject any dog to pain and suffering, but this girl’s spirit was huge. She woke up every day, loving life and bringing joy to us and the other dogs. She didn’t seem to know anything was wrong with her.
You may remember this little video from a few months ago that captures her spirit in a couple of seconds:
There was no way we were going to let this sweet girl die without a fight.
So, with our hearts in our throats, we decided to move forward with the heartworm treatment. She came through the first round of shots like a little champ, wondering what was wrong with us for being so worried. The second dose was no biggie to her, either.
Donna and the volunteers all fell in love with this little beacon of light and hoped like heck she would at least find a foster home, if not a forever home. But, of course, not many people come to us, looking for a heartworm-recovering, gasping, aging, limping dog. It’s just our reality.
That said, imagine our delight when Kasey and Kimberly, the girls who stepped up to the plate in September to transport Ginger all the way from Georgia to Ohio, decided to foster her. They already had a special-needs rescue; they understood the trials. They waited several weeks for this girl to go through all of her heartworm treatments, but on Dec. 20, they picked her up and brought her home.
And now? Here’s some photos and an update that will make all of us smile tonight …
Pippa Update
[nggallery id=163]
“I saw Pippa’s pictures and stories on the Facebook page and remember reading the story to Kimberly and talking about how awful this dog’s life had been. We hadn’t talked about fostering since we just adopted one in April, but after getting involved with the rescue and all these wonderful people, we thought we should step up to the plate. We talked about it and decided Pippa deserved to be spoiled a little. 🙂 We had to wait 2 months so she could go through heartworm treatment but right before Christmas, went to pick her up.
Pippa has an amazing attitude, we could all learn from that. And I call her ‘lalala’ because she is so happy-go-lucky. She’s settling in with zero issues, aside from licking her brother’s face once and getting a little snapped at. She loves food and takes begging to a whole new level. She loves standing on all furniture, including end and coffee tables. She jumps from the table to the ottoman to the couch like a rabbit and with minimal stumbling, lol. OK, so all these things are the things that make us laugh and make me tell her she has no manners, but she is also insanely cute and loving. We have a feeling she won’t be a ‘foster’ for long.”
August was definitely the dog days of summer with us scrambling to adopt out the influx we had just encountered. In the midst, we kicked off Eli’s Wish List, received some much-needed help and took in yet another precious dog who was down on his luck.
Through a Dog’s Ear also sent us a collection of 15 CD sets to help calm the dogs. This has really proven effective for some of our more anxious dogs, and we have been thrilled to give them to adoptive parents. If you adopted a dog from us and did not receive one but would like one, please let us know.
We also put out a call to all adoptive parents for video and photos for our promotional video. Stay tuned, we’re in the final phases of creating that and will be debuting it soon!
A Little Help
A much-needed grant arrived from the Petco Foundation. The funds helped assist us with multiple vet bills incurred during our larger-than-normal intake numbers this year. We were not sure how we were going to get through the summer, so the timing was priceless. It came and went to the vet quickly, of course, but we were thankful beyond words for the help.
Hartley’s Road to Recovery Begins
Our favorite old man Hartley arrived at the end of August. His shelter photo, which featured him sporting some Freddy Krueger claws and looking nothing short of pitiful, had exploded on the rescue boards. He had hundreds of people rallying to save him and let him know what love means.
After the massive intake in July, we were definitely in no position to take on another dog, much less a senior with special needs. Alas, the outpouring of love and pledges for him was overwhelming and once he arrived from the kill shelter in Warner Robbins and smiled, it was all over. He was one of ours.
This sweetheart has suffered a lot of neglect in his life and is still recovering. He just had ear canal surgery last week. Once he is through this current challenge, we hope his suffering will end, once and for all. Despite his trials, he has been a beacon of sunshine at our rescue and, when he is ready, he is going to make someone an amazing dog.

Peyton waited for 5 long years for his forever family.
Peyton had been at rescue for what felt like forever. He was part Beagle and bigger than the other Jacks, so many people overlooked him when they visited. Five years to spend without a family is a little much for any dog to bear, but this precious boy took it in as much stride as possible. He continued to play ball, dig holes and enjoy every moment he spent with Momma Donna and the volunteers.
And, of course, he was handsome beyond words and loved having his photo taken.
In May of this year, he finally found his forever home with the Childresses in Alabama They had adopted a JRT, Rusty, from us several years ago. Rusty had left them for the Rainbow Bridge, and they were looking for a friend for their little Penny, who was lonely without him. Peyton was the man.
During Peyton’s exit exam, the vet found some lumps under his fur and had them biopsied. They turned out to be cancerous and needed to be removed ASAP. All signs of cancer were quickly removed, and he healed quickly with a lot of TLC from his new family.
Today, he is living the life he missed all those years in the kennel. He is enjoy all the spoils of house life, including a little couch potato’ness. 😉
July was explosive. There is just no other way to say it. Our numbers exploded and one of our favorite firecrackers, Mars, finally got his forever home.
Mission for Mars
Mars’ expression after we told him he was getting his forever home … we kid you not.
Mars came to us an absolute mess a few years ago … but a gorgeous one. Even with facial scars from skin allergies, he was a beyond-handsome Parson Russell whom no one could take their eyes off of … especially one of our volunteers, who fell head over heels for him but couldn’t take him home. 😉
We still receive timely updates and photos of Mars in his new home and you can bank on seeing a post dedicated just to him in the coming days.
More Festival Fun
Furever Fit in Johns Creek had their grand opening and invited us to attend. We had a great time meeting everyone and hanging out for the day. Best of all, three of our babies were adopted! Chip went home with the Moore family and Jocelyn, one of Susie’s puppies, went home with the Ramsey family.
[nggallery id=116]
So. Many. Dogs.
The most explosive part of the month (year!)? The arrival of eight dogs within a week: Tessa, Maggie, Ginger, Ringo, Tasha, Sasha, Linus and Opal. We had never received such an intake at once (or even within a year!) and it was a little overwhelming for such a small rescue. We are just now recovering, but happy to report that almost everyone from that group has found their forever home.
Ringo moved to foster care and was adopted by the Lester family in October.
Sasha was scooped up in mere seconds and renamed Pippa, while her daughter, Tasha, patiently waited until October to find her doting parents.
Opal was snatched up by the Golder family in September and recently came back to visit us.
Linus took a trip up north, snapped at someone in fear … and then made a trip back down South. He is now loving life with his “forever foster” home.
Ginger and Maggie had a much harder time waiting … but we’ll read about those success stories in the coming months! 😉
Tessa is the only one left out of the bunch. Despite her silly ways, she is adorable and we are very surprised she is still with us … but have no doubts we’ll be sharing her success story soon.

Fancy was dumped at Fulton County Animal Shelter after 7 years with her family. Why, we have no idea. Maybe it’s because they knew she was sick. All we did know is she “spoke” to one of our volunteers, who agreed to sponsor her to adoption, so we pulled her on her PTS day.
Her stay at the rescue was short; she ended up at the vet within days with a persistent cough, runny nose and fever. She was eventually relocated to another vet for another opinion. The conclusion? The rare but very real canine flu. It was a rough stretch and the unknown was frustrating, but that’s all behind her now.
She needed a place to heal, and we knew a senior who needed someone to heal. Jane stepped up to take care of her and did such a wonderful job in nursing her back to perfect health. Jane was moving and couldn’t keep her, so she went to spend some time in the mountains with her next fosters … only to land up as a foster in the home of her original sponsor. Somehow, someway, she easily managed to make herself a permanent addition.
She is now barking at squirrels, munching on homemade treats and napping under blankets with three other Jacks in our photographer’s house. Here’s some photos of her living the forever life.
The moment we saw Shelby, we knew she was going to fly out of here … and she did.
Shelby was with us for such a short time that most of you probably won’t remember her. For those of us who did meet her, we will never forget her.
She was on death row in Valdosta when we pulled her July. Her precious face had been gracing the rescue boards and people were scrambling to save her. We didn’t have any room or transport at the time, so she spent a few days in boarding before Terri made the drive down south to pick her up. The moment we saw her perky little self in person, we squealed – literally! What a sweet, precious, little girl this was. Even though she was battling heartworm, we knew she wasn’t going to stay with us for long … and she didn’t.
Within a couple of weeks, she had been renamed to Daisy and was bound for New Jersey to live with her new parents, Bob and Peg Low, who were more than prepared to help her heal. The Lows are the wonderful parents of our most amazing volunteer, Debbie Hasten, and have helped us countless times in the past. They even adopted a beautiful Angel from us in 2006.
Debbie and family also adopted two sweethearts from us – Bo (2005) and Baxter (2011). Suffice to say, they have been “with” us for a lot time and helped us through some of our darkest hours. They continue to keep us alive and well on a daily basis.
These adorable girls are living the dream, spending their days squirrel watching from their favorite window and playing in the yard. Here’s a couple of photos to prove it.
Summer was in the air, which meant June was a month for rescue events and fairs … and beating the heat.
Animal Rescue Fair
Susie and her puppies attended the Animal Rescue Fair at Wills Park Equestrian Center in Alpharetta. We didn’t get any adoptions, but awareness is always good and it was great to meet some of the other rescue groups.

Have you ever wondered who that adorable boy is on the front of our promotional brochures? That’s precious little Gilbert.
Gilbert arrived at the ranch from a South Carolina shelter in October 2011 with a big ole wiggly tail and a huge heart … which, unfortunately, was plagued with heartworms. He was also dealing with the aftermath of a bad neuter. He had been on the redline list when his photo ended up in our email box. One look at that adorable face, and we couldn’t fathom the thought of this precious boy leaving this world. We could just tell he had so much love to give.
More than one of our volunteers wanted to take him home permanently, but were not in the position to do so. So, for several months, all the ladies here both dreamed about and dreaded the day this precious boy would find his forever home and leave us.
That day came in March when his parents, Allen and Amy, met him. He was still dealing with heartworms after a slow-kill process didn’t work, but they didn’t care. They had been through the process with their former dog and they knew how to deal with it. They were smitten and so was he.
He has since gone on to conquer heartworms and is living the life in Marietta.
Here’s an update and photos from Mom:
“Gilbert loves sitting on his porch, watching all the neighbors while sunning himself. He is very active and has his favorite dog park where he has meet many new four-legged fiends. He is such a lovely boy, and a major bed hog. He is loved very much. He is a ray of sunshine. Truly!!!!”
We had so many third-party requests and posts on our Facebook wall and website that we had to do something. As much as we want to save every unwanted Jack Russell in Georgia, visitors were getting confused about which dogs were ours, which ones were in homes not affiliated with us and which ones were in shelters. Several situations arose because of this, and we had to discontinue courtesy posts because of potential legal issues.
To find the best way to help these Jacks when we can’t, we created a group for posts. It quickly spiraled out of control (not a bad thing!), so a page was set up instead. One of the most hands-on cross-posters from the group stepped up to grab the helm and turned it into the separate, life-saving page it is today: Georgia Jacks. We are also incredibly lucky to have Cara as a crucial member of our volunteer team. We have no idea how we made it without her. She has been a lifesaver when it comes to spur-of-the-moment emergencies, vet trips, shelter pulls and transport, TLC for the dogs … and TLC for Donna and the volunteers as well.
We encourage everyone to Like the Georgia Jacks page and help network/adopt these sweethearts.

On the heels of a smashing success at SweetWater, we participated in the annual WoofStock in Suwanee. We met a lot of new people and saw lots of old friends. Pumpkin showed up with her agility equipment to give everyone a show. We also drew for the cabin raffle and three lucky winners won a weekend getaway in the Smokies.

The Vet Bills Begin to Mount
Our beloved Peyton, who spent five long years with us, gave us a good scare in the middle of May with some cancerous lumps under his skin. We couldn’t fathom anything happening to this sweet boy and were overjoyed when he came through the surgery with flying colors. But that wasn’t all. He healed with and was adopted by the Childress family in Alabama. Look for a separate update on him soon.
Fancy also landed at our rescue in mid-May with a mystery cough that would not go away. After stays with and evaluations by several vets, she was finally diagnosed with the rare but very real canine flu. She was nursed back to health by her foster, Jane Cox, and eventually went on to be adopted by the original sponsor her pulled her. Stay tuned for an update on her as well.
On top of those mounting vet bills, two little ones (Jack and Jill) showed up at our doorstep. Someone had dumped them in the Walmart parking lot. Nothing like raising puppies! These two also found a wonderful home with the Turpin family and became known as Apollo and Starbuck. Unfortunately, Starbuck left us for the Rainbow Bridge following complications during her spay. We are as heartbroken as her family, but are so happy when Apollo comes back to visit us!
Apollo, right, playing with Penny during his visit in November. What a gorgeous boy he has become!

Spring was in the air. We spent most of our days at the rescue, enjoying the fresh air (and pollen) and “de-winterizing” all the kennels. We did devote one weekend to a great fundraiser.
SweetWater Fest
We took a gamble by participating in SweetWater Fest, a “non-dog” special event – and what a great payoff! Even though dogs weren’t allowed in the park this year, plenty of people with plenty of smartphones had plenty of photos of their dogs to share. We kicked off our cabin raffle and actually made a dent in our vet bill … for the month, at least. We can’t wait to for next year’s festival. See you there!

Ginger was abandoned and found running with some four-legged friends beside a busy street last year. Donna and others worked for several days to “catch” them and take them to different rescues/homes. Ginger came home with us. She didn’t have an ounce of Jack in her, but that didn’t matter. This happy little girl lit up our world while she lived with us. Aside from her separation anxiety issues, she was the perfect dog: Snuggly, wiggly and thankful for every bit of attention. She did not like life in a kennel, though, so we knew we had to find her a home.
In May, one of our dedicated volunteers teamed up with her 10-year-old niece, who needed a snuggle-bug to call her own, to convince Mom and Dad the family needed another dog. They needed Ginger. Said volunteer and niece were very persuasive. Within days, Ginger was on her way to North Carolina to her forever life. Thanks to the Davis family for taking this precious girl into your home and keeping us in stories and photos.
Here’s an update and photos from her family.

“Ginger has been a great addition to our family! She enjoys going on walks with Kinsey and snuggling in our bed every morning after breakfast. She cannot wait to go on car rides, but not to the vet! She loves unconditionally and it makes us happy she has a real home to spread her love. 🙂 Thank you for matching us up with her!”
March both came in and left like a lamb … and, for the first (and hopefully last) time ever, we lost one of our precious flock. There was plenty happening behind the scenes, of course …
In Memory of Rhonda
On March 28, we suffered a loss of one of our rescues that we will never forget. Rhonda was one of our lifers because she had Cushing’s Disease. She thrived with us for several years, and we gave her the best care possible, but in the end, she let us know when she was finished with the fight and we respected her decision.
We have never lost a rescue while they lived with us, and she will never be forgotten. We miss you and your hugs, sweetheart.
Thank you so much to Susan for sponsoring her during her time of need.

Social Media’ites
We launched our Pinterest page and allegedly set a trend for several other rescues to follow. Have you seen it yet? If not, be sure to check it out and follow us. Our Facebook page also hit 500 followers. The magic of the Internet–both through our website and social media–has been monumental in getting our word out and finding homes (and awesome volunteers/sponsors) for our small rescue.

After a turbulent January, we welcomed a rather quiet February … quiet for rescue, that is.
Momma Donna’s Birthday
Donna Durham, our co-founder and owner, celebrated her birthday on Feb. 20 with an outpouring of birthday wishes from friends, family and supporters. She responded with happy tears the next day. If it wasn’t for her “dogged” determination to rescue and care for these babies, we would not exist.

Name Change
We officially added “Adoptions & Sanctuary” to our name to reflect the changes at the rescue. We also created a new logo and launched our updated website and branding materials – all volunteered by Soccer Dog Design. We also debuted our T-shirts for the first time. We just received another batch; if you haven’t gotten yours yet, you can do so online or at this weekend’s Super Adoption Event. All proceeds go to the dogs.
Tessa and Westin’s Big Adventure
Following the Flashpoint debacle, we were not in a position to take in any new rescues. There was a foster family very much in need of rehoming two JRTs, Tessa and Westin. We all put a call out for adoptive parents, and a wonderful couple (Quentin and Susan Mims) from Texas stepped up to take them. They were unable to make the long haul to Atlanta to get them, so we put together a volunteer transport. Facebook hooked us up with Anna Papadimitriou, a perfect go-between to link Atlanta and Texas in Mississippi, and this adorable couple of pups were able to stay together. They are now living the life with their new family.
Here’s an update and photos from their parents:
“(Westin and Tessa) are doing great and have been such a joy in our life. While Tessa enjoys chasing the squirrels in the yard, Westin would much rather be chasing his ball. That boy can play ball 24/7. They share a twin bed in their own room. They are absolutely spoiled, but they deserve it. Tessa would much rather be in the bed when she’s not outside and Westin would rather be right with Moma, no matter where that may be. We love our babies and thank God for the day they came into our lives. Thank you Georgia Jack Russell for your help getting them to us.”

We first saw Susie and her six puppies on the rescue boards. They were in a high-kill shelter and scheduled to be put down. We couldn’t fathom the reality, but were out of room at the time and there was no way we could handle raising puppies. One our volunteers/fosters, Terri, took the whole group in and raised the babies to adoption. Delilah decided she would stay with mom. 😉
When Susie was ready to let her babies go, she came to see us. She had anxiety issues, liver problems, bad teeth from poor nutrition and buckshot pellets lodged under her skin from where some not-so-nice people shot at her … and that’s just naming a few of her issues. It was going to take a lot of work and funds to help her become the dog she deserved to be.
Once again, the Roose family stepped up to take one of our down-and-out rescues to the next level … and then some. They had done an amazing job with Pumpkin, who was our success story of 2011, and we knew Susie was destined to a life in horse-carriage heaven.
Here’s the latest photos and an update from the Roose Family:

Hello to all our friends at the Rescue and Momma Donna,
There is so much to tell you about how Pumpkin and Susie have grown over this past year. We have seen some real highs and lows, but we continue to move forward in our training. We prove that rescues, no matter how bad their background, are not damaged goods.
Pumpkin is doing well. She was doing advanced level agility over the summer and was set to show in the fall until mommy dislocated her knee, so she has to practice in the back yard for a while. We hope to restart real training after February. We have not stopped working on her other issues, and she is a solid citizen at the dog park. Her heart condition has remained stable this year, so we are set to go! We are proof special needs dogs can go on to become great pets.
Susie has been doing great. She graduated from basic obedience and has been doing beginner agility. She is able to do four elements without a leash. We have been working on her people issues. She no longer runs when a stranger approaches or cowers at every loud noise. Her liver is working much better, and she eats like a horse. Lately, she has been doing much better at the dog park by engaging in play with other dogs, small children, and the elderly. My how we have grown!
Both Pumpkin and Susie are still rolling in the carriage every Saturday with big brother, Bubbles the Horse. They love their long rides in the sunshine. It took a while for them to figure out who gets to ride ‘shotgun’. Pumpkin gets to ride in the seat with mom.
We won’t lie: The year started off on an incredibly heartbreaking note. Flashpoint Kennels in Rome burned to the ground on Jan. 3. More than 30 dogs (mostly Chihuahuas and Boston Terriers) died in the fire, but 23 Jack Russell Terriers survived. The news broadcasted it for several days. Words were spoken, people had opinions and tears were shed, but in the end? Twenty-three Jack Russells still needed homes and that’s all that mattered. It was time to take action.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of several rescues and individuals around the country, all of these beautiful babies were eventually relocated into rescues or forever homes. We still have two beautiful Jacks (Spruce and Lorelee) and an adorable Boston Penny who need homes.
This horrific event changed the lives of many and set the tone for the year: “From Tragedy to Triumph.”
Donna reassuring Lorelee that everything will be OK after the Flashpoint fire. This little sweetheart is with us now and looking for her forever home.
Pet Bed Paradise
On the flip side of tragedy, the outpouring of generosity from our supporters was phenomenal in January. We received a huge order of pet beds from Animal Rescue Aid. Our guys and gals have been enjoying them ever since. We are in need of more for the indoor kennel we are working on. If you would like to donate, you can get all the information you need here.
